Recraft creates and edits raster and vector graphics. Its own models, Studio and API support illustrations, icons and visual styles.

When you need Recraft
If an image will be used in an interface, print layout or icon set, an attractive raster file may not be enough. Recraft offers raster and vector models alongside editing operations. Choose the output format for its actual purpose.
Vector graphics are useful when scaling and further manual editing matter. Check generated files, however: complex outlines, extra nodes and small details can make them difficult to use at a small size.
Style and a series of materials
In Recraft, you can define a visual direction and use references. For an illustration set, first establish the palette, shape language and level of detail, then move on to individual scenes.
Repeating similar colours does not create a complete design system. Compare line thickness, perspective and how elements work at different sizes. This review helps find discrepancies before publishing the whole series.
Editing and API
The official documentation covers generation, image edits, backgrounds, vectorisation and upscaling. Studio provides these through its interface; the API integrates the required operation into your own workflow.
For automation, separate creating the initial file from preparing it for use: check format, dimensions and suitability, then export it to its destination. Generation alone does not guarantee that the technical brief has been met.
What to check in an icon
View the result at its intended display size. An expressive icon on a large canvas may become a blot in a navigation bar. Check its silhouette, detail spacing and recognisability without a label.
Place the images side by side and compare their visual weight as a set. Matching file dimensions do not make symbols look equally prominent. A final manual adjustment is often needed so the set feels consistent and does not distract from the interface’s content.
Why choosing the right plan matters
Recraft’s free and paid plans differ in rights and material visibility. The official comparison says free-plan images belong to Recraft, appear in the gallery and are not licensed for commercial use.
Treat free access as a way to explore the tool until you have checked the terms for your task. Subscription credits and separately purchased credits may have different expiry dates. Read the current rules and pricing before a commercial project.
Suitable tasks
- Icons and vector illustrations
- A series of graphics with a shared visual direction
- Removing and replacing the background
- Embedding visual operations via API
Strengths
- Raster and vector models
- Tools for working with style
- Documented API
Limitations
- The free plan does not grant a commercial license for outputs
- Vector output needs technical checks
- Credits and access to operations depend on the plan
