From explanation to project changes

Codex helps you understand a codebase, find the cause of a defect and prepare changes. It can read project files and instructions, run checks and show its results. Available actions depend on how it is run and the permissions granted.

Local work uses your prepared environment, and cloud work is done in a separate configured environment. The official documentation also describes the terminal, the IDE extension, and other ways to access it. They cannot be considered fully interchangeable without setting up dependencies and rights.

Set boundaries for the task

A good assignment states the observed problem, expected behaviour and project constraints. For example, fix a filter lost during pagination while preserving existing URLs. Include reproduction steps and existing checks. This helps the agent find the cause and you accept the change.

What Codex needs to know about the repository

Build and test commands, architectural notes and current AGENTS.md rules are useful. Secrets must stay out of instructions and commits. Grant network and external-system access for the particular task: fixing a local component does not always require permission to publish the website.

When agents share work, give each a separate area of responsibility. After parallel changes, run a combined build: edits that work independently may be incompatible together.

Checking application code and behavior

Read diff and check the behavior, not just the final story. Look at the handling of exceptions, external requests and new dependencies. To fix it, you need a test or a reproducible check that shows the difference before and after the change. A large number of identical tests does not replace one useful scenario.

For an interface, also open the page at the intended viewport size and test real user actions. If data is involved, check access permissions and edge cases.

Plans and environment

Codex is included in eligible OpenAI plans; usage limits depend on the plan and how it is used. Cloud tasks require an environment configured with the necessary repositories and tools. Before providing a work project, review the data-handling policies and set the team’s permissions. Automated development is useful when the project owner can still understand and verify the result.

Suitable tasks

  • Exploring a codebase
  • Fixing defects
  • Tests and refactoring
  • Code review and tasks across multiple files
Features

Strengths

  • Working with a real project
  • Local and cloud access methods
  • Official tools and permission settings
Things to consider

Limitations

  • Dependencies and a correctly configured environment are required
  • Generated changes need review
  • Limits and access depend on the plan
