Assign the task and return to it later

Jules handles asynchronous coding tasks such as fixing a bug, adding documentation or implementing a narrowly scoped feature. The user connects a GitHub repository, assigns a task and later returns to the proposed changes. This differs from completing a line in an open editor.

Prepare the repository first.

The official guide recommends choosing accessible repositories and configuring the environment. An agent needs clear install, build and test commands. A project that runs only because of forgotten local developer files will be hard to reproduce elsewhere.

Use AGENTS.md to describe the project’s structure and rules for changing code. Specify where the tests are, how checks run and which areas must not change without a reason. Keep the instructions current: conflicting rules can send the agent in the wrong direction.

What task can be isolated effectively

Choose a reproducible bug with a clear expected result, such as incorrect handling of an empty value. Provide steps, the affected screen or function and acceptance criteria. For a large task, request a plan and divide the work first; otherwise the resulting changes may be too extensive to review.

Approve based on the diff and behavior

After completion, review the modified files, make sure each revision is linked to the task and run the appropriate checks. If the agent reports tests, see which commands were executed and in which environment. The new check should detect the original defect, not just confirm the selected implementation.

A successful build does not prove the interface works in every required state. Test a feature’s normal flow, empty input and external-service failure. Accept changes in small, logical units.

Permissions and Conditions

Jules gets access to the selected repositories; limit it to the desired projects. Secrets are transferred through the specified settings, not written to the source code. Documentation calls the product experimental; plans and scope of tasks may vary. For regular teamwork, agree on the rules for review and publication of changes in advance.
