Command is a family of Cohere generative models for applications working with text and enterprise data. The documentation covers chat, RAG, tools and different deployment options.

Responses based on data provided
Cohere Command is designed for applications whose answers must draw on an organization's materials. A typical RAG workflow first finds relevant documents, then passes the retrieved passages to the model. Generation helps produce a clear answer, but does not itself confirm that the search selected the right sources.
It is therefore useful to evaluate the whole process: which document entered the context, which claim was extracted and how it appears in the answer. A citation makes checking easier but does not rule out misinterpretation.
Tools and different family models
Official materials describe tool use, multilingual tasks and model variants with different capabilities. Some configurations support visual inputs. Choose a model for your use case and data format: the capabilities of one version cannot automatically be attributed to the entire family.
A tool call is a proposal for structured action on the part of the model. The application must independently check the parameters, permissions and acceptability of the operation. The user request should not be converted into sending a letter, changing an order or accessing data without system control.
Example: information about delivery terms
An online store can build an answering system based on approved shipping and return policies. Pass retrieved passages to the model with the question, require a policy reference and allow it to decline when information is insufficient. Provide a clear handoff to a human operator for particular regions or non-standard orders.
Check for cases when two documents contradict each other or the rule is already outdated. The system should notice the uncertainty, and not confidently choose a convenient condition. This is an example of development and verification, not our Command quality test.
An evaluation key differs from a production key
Cohere provides evaluation API keys with limited free usage. Production or commercial use requires suitable production access; model limits and approval requirements for specific modes vary. Monitor consumption using actual API usage records.
Cost depends on the selected model, input and output volumes and hosting method. Separate deployment options exist for enterprise environments. Check exact quotas and prices before signing up instead of carrying them over from an old review.
What the team will need
You need data preparation, error handling, logs that avoid unnecessary secrets and a set of test questions. A successful Playground answer does not prove reliability across the entire knowledge base. Start with a limited document set and assess answers, refusals and references.
Distinguish the model itself from the surrounding application. The application handles permissions, source freshness and external actions. Industry-specific and financial conclusions require specialist review regardless of where the model is hosted.
Suitable tasks
- Build a question-answering system based on corporate documents
- Connect the generation to the application via API
- Prepare a RAG workflow with verifiable citations
- Arrange controlled tool calls
Strengths
- Official models and detailed API
- Documented RAG and tool-use scenarios
- Enterprise use cases and deployment options
Limitations
- An application system must be developed
- Citations and conclusions still need to be verified
- Evaluation keys do not replace production access
Selection and conditions
- Free access

- Trial period
- Yes
- No sign-up required

- API
- Yes
“Not confirmed” means there is not enough information. The feature may still be available; check the developer’s terms.
- Input formats

Terms
API evaluation is free within limits; commercial use requires production terms. Available modalities and deployment methods depend on the model. From task to first result
Practical example
- Task
- Build a question-answering system based on corporate documents
- What to prepare
- Two of your own documents describing delivery deadlines, with personal data removed in advance.
Task brief or prompt
Compare the delivery terms in the two attached texts. List differences in deadlines, exceptions and passages where information is insufficient. For each conclusion, provide a quotation and the source document’s name. Do not fill in missing information.
Expected result
A table of discrepancies with quotations that can be checked against the source documents.
How to check the result
- Find each quotation in the original document.
- Check the exceptions and do not treat the answer as a legal opinion.
An editorial teaching example of a task brief, not the result of hands-on testing of the service. Check that the required mode is available, that you have rights to the source material and that the intended use of the result is permitted.
