AnythingLLM organizes work around documents and separate workspaces. You can use local components, connect models and tools, or deploy your own instance for a team.

Space for specific work
AnythingLLM collects documents, model settings and dialogues into workspaces. It is convenient when the same person deals with several topics: support instructions, project materials and personal notes do not have to lie in the general context. Space helps to organize sources, but the semantic separation should be thought out by yourself.
The main desktop mode is designed for use on your computer. Self-hosting is available for multiple users, alongside a separate cloud option. When choosing instructions, check the edition: installation options, user management and maintenance are not identical across them.
What privacy is made of
The platform selects a language model, indexing component and vector data storage. Among the supported options are local and cloud systems. A completely local process is obtained only when all the components involved work in the desired contour. Connecting an external search, model, or agent can transfer information to another service.
Before downloading the documents, it is useful to check the configuration of the space. What files are allowed to be used, how is the index updated, who sees conversations and what tools are available to the agent? Answers to these questions are more important than the general word “private” on the main page.
Summary with verifiable grounds
For example, the workspace can be filled with coordinated materials of a small project. Ask about decisions made, deadlines and unresolved dependencies. Ask to cite the source of each statement and separate the final decisions from the preliminary discussion. Open the cited documents before sending a summary to colleagues.
If the two files contradict each other, it is better to get an indication of a conflict than a smooth combined response. For such work, it is first necessary to remove duplicates and note the current versions. This is an editorially suggested application scenario, not a statement of personal product testing or an error-free search guarantee.
Integrations require maintenance
AnythingLLM provides a developer API to manage and work with spaces from other applications. API documentation is available on the installed instance, the keys are managed by users with the necessary authority. The key gives access to the functions of the platform, so it can not be included in a public client or a public example.
The free Desktop edition is suitable for getting started on your own. Paid features, hosting and connected-provider costs are separate. A self-hosted team deployment still needs updates, backups, access control and server resources. As the knowledge base grows, check the sources themselves for currency as well as reviewing answers.
Suitable tasks

- Create an agent process with the right tools
- Embed work with spaces via API
Strengths
- Free desktop application without a mandatory account
- Selection of local and cloud components
- Own placement and API of workspaces
Limitations
- Cloud models and external tools are changing the boundaries of processing
- The quality of the answer depends on the indexation and the model chosen
- Command instance requires administration

Practical example
- Task
- Build a working knowledge base on the project
- What to prepare
- Allowed set of documents or saved working context with notes about the project.
Task brief or prompt
Find out what decisions on the project are confirmed by available sources. Specify the source of each decision, its date, if known, and unresolved issues. Separate the baseline information from the assumptions.
Expected result
Summary of confirmed decisions with verifiable references or indications to sources.
How to check the result
- Open these documents or context records.
- Make sure that the outdated discussion is not presented as a decision.
An editorial teaching example of a task brief, not the result of hands-on testing of the service. Check that the required mode is available, that you have rights to the source material and that the intended use of the result is permitted.
