Editing, color, and audio with AI tools in a professional editor

4.65 / 5Directory score
Official website

DaVinci Resolve uses AI for specific editing and restoration operations within a complete project. Much of Neural Engine is available in paid Studio, so a free installation should not be treated as access to the entire AI toolset.

AI helps with specific editing tasks

In a long project, finding a take, separating a subject from the background, and cleaning up a poor audio track take time. DaVinci Resolve integrates these operations into its editing, color grading, effects, and audio environment. Results remain part of the project, where you can adjust a transition, inspect adjacent frames, and replace source footage. This is an editor with AI tools, rather than a video generator driven by a single request. The editor determines the basic workflow: import, selection, assembly, processing, and export checks.

The scope of Studio

Blackmagic separately lists DaVinci AI Neural Engine features, noise reduction, Magic Mask, transcript-based work, and dialogue processing in Studio. Its updates page describes content-based media search. Features belong to specific editions and require suitable hardware. The same product name on a download does not imply the same set of tools.

Evaluate AI selections in motion. A mask may look clean in the first frame but lose hair, a sleeve edge, or an object in someone’s hand after a turn. Noise reduction presents a similar issue: judging only the silence between phrases does not reveal whether quiet speech was preserved. A proper check means watching and listening to the entire clip.

Example: interview in a small workshop

Use your own interview recording with ventilation noise and several shots of a craftsperson at work. First arrange the answers in a coherent sequence. Apply suitable dialogue processing in the available edition, and try selecting the person for a targeted background adjustment. Color-correct the two cameras separately. This exercise uses the editor’s tools; it does not assume a button that understands the entire scenario in natural language.

Compare processed and original audio at matched loudness, checking consonants and word endings. Inspect the mask boundary as hands move. If automation fails, narrow its scope or adjust it manually. Assess the export outside the program, especially speech synchronization and playback on the target device.

License, equipment and automation

The free version lets you learn a complete video editing workflow. Studio is purchased separately and extends AI, effects, and professional features. The official site documents a remote scripting API, but this controls the editor’s workflow rather than providing a general-purpose cloud API for video generation. Teams should check cloud collaboration terms separately.

Project materials and many operations are processed on the computer; this does not establish that every current AI mode works without a network. Performance depends on the GPU, format, and project. Before a large task, test a short excerpt with the same source assets and settings. This reveals codec or memory issues before they affect the whole edit.

Suitable tasks

  • Edit an interview with cutaways
  • Process dialogue in Studio
  • Select object for local correction
  • Find the required footage in a media library

Strengths

  • Editing, color, effects, and audio connected within one project
  • Verifiable manual revision of AI operations
  • A free edition for the basic workflow
Things to consider

Limitations

  • Many AI functions require Studio
  • Requirements for GPU and source formats
  • Masks and speech processing are checked in motion

Terms

Free refers to the base edition; AI Neural Engine and several other features belong to Studio. API means the editor’s scripting API. Fully offline operation of every AI mode has not been confirmed.

From task to first result

Practical example

Task
Edit an interview with cutaways
What to prepare
A short instructional script and your own videos, photographs and voiceover demonstrating the action.

Task brief or prompt

Assemble instructions with sequential steps, clear captions and pauses to inspect details. Do not add unverified product properties. If a required shot is missing, flag the gap instead of inventing a demonstration.

Expected result

A rough edit of an instructional video. Available generation operations, formats and export options depend on the service and plan.

How to check the result

  • The order of shots matches the actual sequence of actions.
  • Captions are readable on a phone and do not obscure important details.
  • Speech, music, subtitles and rights to each source material are verified.
  • Check the watermark, resolution, storage and export format before paying or publishing.

An editorial teaching example of a task brief, not the result of hands-on testing of the service. Check that the required mode is available, that you have rights to the source material and that the intended use of the result is permitted.
